Death of a Father
===========
I am writing this piece aftermath the death of the father of one of my colleague. The tears I saw in my friend’s eyes prompted me to write this. May his father’s Soul Rest in Peace.
Fathers’ are more often than not, a thoroughly misunderstood lot. Their sternness is seen as a sign of rigidness. Their love is never fully understood. They toil hard to rear the family and want their sons and daughters to occupy eminent positions in life. They sacrifice their personal likes and preferences. They always put the interest of other family members ahead of theirs. Of course, there are deplorable fathers also- wife beaters and persons who ill-treat and manhandle their children but we are not talking about exceptions here....
A Son/Daughter- Father Relationship has various shades. There are cases where both Father and Son (daughter) are famous, Raj & Rishi Kapoor, Dilip and Rajdeep Sardesai, H.D. and Arun Shourie, Pandit Nehru and Indira Gandhi and like. The admiration and regard in this case is mutual. Some Sons like Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachchan, Viswanathan Anand, Chetan Bhagat and others are more famous and well-known than their respective fathers. But their first admirers would undoubtedly be their own fathers. There is a third category where the sons earn noterity and bring disrepute to their fathers- Mahatma Gandhi and his son, Sunil and Sanjay Dutt and few others. More than anybody else, fathers feel the pain and sorrow for their wards’ mis-deeds. If the loss of a son is painful to a father, loss of a father is nothing short of an agony to the son. One feels that the earth has slipped beneath one’s feet. One is left speechless and stunned.
When one’s father dies, his entire life-span, unfolds in front of the son’s eyes. Different shades of his character, his favourite food, movies enjoyed by him, novels he cherished- all keep appearing in slow motion. Moments freeze in time and refuse to leave the eyes.
The loss is irreparable, the pain unbearable and the agony incomprehensible. Emptiness engulfs the son and a feeling of helplessness descends on him. Even God does not have the power to change the situation. Sons are cursed to live with this feeling.
Oh my friend’s dear father- you might not know me. But I can assure you that all sons are alike in their affection towards fathers. I SHALL MISS YOU TOO.
